From Fellows to Legislators: LMI Alumni Win Elections
Three Cohort 2 alumni have been elected to state and local government positions, marking a milestone for the program's impact.

Communications Lead
In a historic milestone for the Legislative Mentorship Initiative, three alumni from Cohort 2 have successfully contested and won elections to legislative positions across Nigeria.
The New Legislators
Hon. Ruth Ki - Plateau State House of Assembly
Ruth Ki, who served as a cybersecurity analyst and education advocate before the fellowship, won a seat in the Plateau State House of Assembly. Her campaign focused on digital literacy and youth employment.
“The LMI gave me the blueprint for turning technical expertise into public service. Now I’m building on that blueprint from inside the legislature.”
Hon. Fahad Abubakar - Sokoto State House of Assembly
Fahad’s work in digital governance and his experience as a former Special Assistant positioned him well for legislative service. He campaigned on a platform of government transparency through technology.
Hon. Halima Mohammed - FCT Area Council
Halima transitioned from her role at the Yaradua Foundation to winning a seat in the Abuja Municipal Area Council. Her focus on gender-responsive budgeting has already garnered attention.
What This Means
These victories demonstrate that the LMI model—combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills and networks—can produce electoral-ready candidates. They also represent a new generation of legislators who bring diverse professional backgrounds to governance.
Support System
The newly elected alumni continue to receive support from the LMI network:
- Mentorship from senior legislators
- Policy research assistance
- Media and communications training
- Peer support from fellow alumni
We celebrate their victories and look forward to supporting their legislative journeys.
